Essence and Concept
Santal 33 (launched 2011) by Le Labo is built around the idea of warm woods meeting smoky leather in open air. It evokes images of desert fires, leather saddles warmed by sun, and the dry wind drifting smoke. It plays with contrasts: rugged vs polished, smoky vs clean, floral vs woody. The scent has become iconic, both for its distinct profile and its wide influence.

Note Structure

Top notes: Violet accord, Cardamom — spicy and slightly floral/green start that grabs attention with freshness and nuance. 
Heart (middle): Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Iris — creamy yet dry woods, with iris giving a slightly powdery / soft floral lift that tempers the wood.
Base notes: Leather, Papyrus, Ambroxol, Musk — smoky and leathery tones along with resins, soft ambrox and musk, giving depth, warmth, and lingering trail.

Evolution and Experience
Right after spraying, Santal 33 opens with spice and a touch of green-floral note (violet / cardamom). Then the woods—especially sandalwood—become more prominent, offering a creamy yet dry richness. Leather and smoke start appearing in the middle phase, rounding out the woodiness. As it dries down, the fragrance becomes smoother, more intimate, with soft musk and ambrox leaving a warm, lingering skin trail. The smoky/leather effect persists, giving it character and depth over time.

Longevity and Projection
Good to strong. Santal 33 tends to last many hours on skin, often well into the evening. Its projection is noticeable especially early on—people around will sense you—but as hours pass it tends to mellow and become more skin-close while still being perceptible.
